The pauper king • Peter Brock had a point to prove in 1975, and did so in the most extraordinary fashion. After being sacked by Holden, he became a battler privateer and won the Sandown/Bathurst double in the underfunded Gown-Hindhaugh Torana L34. Here is the inside story of that incredible season 50 years ago, told by those who were there.
‘75 snapshot • The Great Race 50 years ago was a classic, old-style enduro – as much a battle against the Mountain itself and the arduous 1000km journey as it was a contest between the cars and drivers. Going the distance was a challenge that proved too much for almost half of the entire field: so bad was the attrition that for a while it looked as though Barry Seton’s under 3.0-litre Capri might finish on the podium. It was a day and a race tailor-made for a fast driver with an innate sense of mechanical sympathy – someone like Peter Brock.
Bondy’s boilover • The ’75 ATCC came too soon for Brocky and the Gown-Hindhaugh team, but Allan Grice peaked just at the right time – Gricey may well have won but for the absence of a thermostat in his Torana L34’s cooling system. Instead, Colin Bond and the HDT prevailed in a series full of drama and excitement – despite the lack of factory Ford involvement.

THE F6 FIX • The six-speed manual transmission in the first F6 Typhoon model was developed for Ford by a small gearbox specialist in rural Queensland. Since then Mal Wood Automotive has gone on to become a leader in aftermarket transmission conversions for muscle cars not just here but also in the USA – it’s a remarkable triumph of Aussie ingenuity on the world stage.
Western Star • Wayne Negus was both a mechanic for the Holden Dealer Team and a driver, and he represented the works Holden outfit in Western Australia running a satellite operation. Those who knew and worked with Negus describe an aloof and even difficult character, but all agree he was a rare talent both behind the wheel and on the tools.
Details of drama • The detailed results of the inaugural Australian Touring Car Championship in 1960 – which have been rarely seen until now – tell quite a tale, as David Greenhalgh explains.
HSVE SENATOR SIGNATURE • It was HSV’s attempt to persuade BMW customers to try a bit of homegrown luxury performance. It’s true that not too many of them were sold on the idea, but not even the most snobbish premium Euro car buyer could deny the objective fact that HSV’s E Series Senator really was a world class luxury sports sedan.
