本书以王辉先生的《古文字通假字典》（中华书局，2008）为材料，对殷商至两汉时期的韵部情况作周遍性的统计分析，对研究范围内的5443组异文通假进行了系统的筛选和整理，剔除掉"同义互代"和"形近讹误"这两类不反映古音情况的异文。继而以中古音韵为基准点，根据通假频次的统计结果来判定上古三十韵部间的亲疏关系，并据此重排韵部次序，阐明传统音韵学的音转理论。
