根据国家现行的统计法规和统计调查制度规定，国家统计局昆明调查队主要调查任务包括：粮食生产调查，畜禽监测，农村居民和城镇居民生活状况调查，农村贫困监测，农民工监测，生产、流通、消费、投资、房地产等价格调查，部分服务业调查，规模以下工业调查，企业采购经理调查，以及国家统计局、云南调查总队、地方政府布置和社会各界委托的专项调查，如文明城市测评、党风廉政建设调查、公众对环境满意度调查等。调查结果经国家统计局、云南调查总队核定并为法定数据。
国家统计局昆明调查队成立以来，在国家统计局云南调查总队正确领导下，在昆明市委、市政府的支持下，始终以提高调查数据质量为中心，坚持"深入实际、实事求是、艰苦奋斗、科学严谨、认真细致"的苏区调查精神，积极开展统计调查工作，优质高效地完成了国家和省布置的各项调查任务。昆明调查队在完成国家调查任务的同时，以市委、市政府的需求为重点，做好调查、监测、预警工作，积极开展分析研究工作，编写了一大批优秀分析材料和研究报告，为昆明市委、市政府提供科学决策的依据，为社会公众提供优质统计调查服务。
昆明调查队为客观、准确地反映2016年昆明市社会经济发展取得的进步和成效，提高昆明调查队优质服务的水平，组织编辑了《昆明调查报告（2016）》一书。
《昆明调查报告（2016）》分为调研报告、工作交流、课题研究、年度报告、"十二五"专题报告等5个部分，主要选编了2016年昆明调查队完成的优秀分析和专题调研报告8篇、优秀课题4篇，年度报告4篇，还包含了11篇"十二五"专题报告，近32万字。
