《永乐大典》初名《文献大成》。明永乐元年，明成祖命解缙、姚广孝等人纂修大型类书，1404年11月编成《文献大成》。《永乐大典》是我国古代编纂的一部大型类书，收录入《永乐大典》的图书均未删未改。《永乐大典》汇集了上自先秦、下迄明初的八千余种古书典籍，除了著名的经史子集，还有哲学、文学、历史、地理、宗教、医卜等各类著作，包罗万象，是中国历史上最大的一部百科全书，它比著名的《不列颠百科全书》成书年代早了300多年。这在当时真可以说是"包括宇宙之广大，统会古今之异同"。《永乐大典》内容包括诗文、戏曲、僧、道、医药、工艺等方方面面，......(The Yongle Encyclopedia was originally named Literature Dacheng.In the first year of the reign of the Yongle Emperor, Yongle Emperor of the Ming Dynasty commissioned Xie Jin and Yao Guangxiao to compile a large leishu encyclopedia, and Literature Dacheng was completed in November 1404.The Yongle Encyclopedia was a large leishu encyclopedia compiled in ancient China, and the texts and reference materials included in The Yongle Encyclopedia had not been deleted and modified.The Yongle Encyclopedia brought together more than 8,000 kinds of ancient books and documents from the pre-Qin Dynasty to the early Ming Dynasty, covering all that had been written on the Confucian canon, as well as various books such as philosophy, literature, history, geography, religion and medicine.
