由于战争父亲失业了，从此以后一家人的生计就靠母亲洗衣来维持。因为贫穷，安徒生小时候没有受过系统的正规教育。1819年9月，安徒生来到哥本哈根，开始了他的奋斗生涯。1822年，柯林为他申请到一份皇家公费，入教会求学。1828年，安徒生通过入学考试，进入哥本哈根大学，1833-1840年，安徒生曾到巴黎、瑞士，意大利、希腊，土耳其等地旅行。安徒生对舞台有着浓厚的兴趣，他曾幻想着当一个芭蕾舞演员或歌唱家，为了实现这个理想，他14岁便只身来到哥本哈根，演员梦虽然破灭了，但他有了学习的机会，这对安徒生来说是个很难得的机会。(Because of the war, the father lost his job, and since then the family’s livelihood depended on the mother’s laundry. Because of poverty, Andersen did not receive formal education when he was a child. In September of 1819, Andersen came to Copenhagen and began his career of struggle. In 1822, Colin applied for a royal fee for him and he went to church to study. In 1828, Andersen entered University of Copenhagen through the entrance examination, in 1833-1840, Andersen traveled to Paris, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Turkey and other places. Andersen has a keen interest in the stage, he had a dream to be a ballet dancer or singer, in order to realize this ideal, he alone came to Copenhagen at the age of 14, although the actor dream was shattered, but he had the opportunity to learn, this was a very rare opportunity for Andersen.)
