This volume centers on the death and funeral of Qin Keqing. The event shakes the household. In the middle of the night Wang Xifeng rouses Grandmother Jia and the alarmed Jia Baoyu rushes to Ningguo Mansion. The family holds elaborate rites. Monks and Daoists chant and the hall is set with a costly coffin and wreaths. Rumors claim improper relations involving Qin. The maid Rui Zhu confesses knowledge and, ashamed, fatally strikes her head. Baozhu finds her and is later taken as a foster daughter. Jia Zhen enlists the eunuch Dai Quan and arranges heavy payments to secure favors. Grief mixes with calculations of rank and influence. Wang Xifeng assumes control of the funeral. She reorganizes the servants into shifts with clear duties. She demands roll calls and strict inspections. Under her orders the household becomes efficient and the burial proceeds with great pomp. The procession includes monks, Daoists and thousands of mourners, and the coffin is temporarily housed at a temple for rites. Afterwards Wang Xifeng moves Baoyu and Qin Zhong to the Mantou Nunnery. There the abbess Jingxu recounts an earlier scandal at Shancai Nunnery that links back to the Jia family. A private liaison between Qin Zhong and Intelligent, a novice, ends in disaster. Qin Zhong is punished by his father and soon dies from shock. Baoyu mourns and Grandmother Jia pays for a modest burial. At the same time the household receives court favor when Yuan Chun is promoted. The volume presents a tense weave of ritual, private sorrow and the play of power and money.
