《雨天的书》收《苦雨》《鸟声》《唁辞》《北京的茶食》《生活之艺术》《无谓的感慨》《神话的典故》《读欲海回狂》《若子的病》《怀旧》《我们的敌人》等50篇散文。1925年7月5日周作人日记有云："编理旧稿51篇，为《雨天的书》一卷，拟出板，今日完了，唯序文未写。"同年12月，《雨天的书》由北京新潮社初版印行。这题目原是1923年11月起在《晨报副镌》上所开专栏名字，"在半年里只写了六篇，随即中止了。"
