(The Chen family originated from descendants of Emperor Shun. To study the propagation, migration and development of the family, the events, activities, contributions of its members, as well as the relics, inheritance and impact of its culture is to understand how the Chinese nation develops and thrives. The Chen family in Yingchuan is the most prominent branch of the Chen family, with large population at home and abroad; the Chen clan that migrated at the end of chaotic Yongjia period to Jiangnan and established itself during the Southern dynasties, is a crucial subsidiary of the Chen family in Yingchuan, whose progeny Mr. Chen Yuehai has been committed to “investigating, sifting materials and conducting field research+AK4 for the history of+AK19 the Chen family and clarifying the facts of different branches” for over a decade, tenaciously and in awe of his ancestors, with impressive results. 9 years ago he edited and published A Historical Study of the Chen Family in Yimen (Jiangxi People’s Publishing House, 2006). In September, 2011 he coauthored with Chen Gang A Sequel to the Historical Study of the Chen Family in Yimen. If these two books focused on the collection, sifting and research of materials, A Review of the Chen Family in Yingchuan is a brilliant academic exploration of many major and controversial issues of the migration and development of the Chen family. For example, in chapters like “The Origin of the Surname Chen”, “Discrimination of the Lineage of the Chen Family in Yingchuan” and “A Reconsideration of Chen Zhen, the First Patriarch of Chen Family in Yingchuan” are systematic studies with fresh insights. For another example, regarding the incident “The Chen Family Changed their Surname into Tian”, the author cited a multitude of ancient texts such as inscriptions on excavated ancient bronze and ceramic objects as well as related studies, to prove that the incident was false. For although the scripts of the character “Chen” varied, the Chen family in Qi State never called themselves “Tian family”. This important discovery that complements existing scholarship. )
