作者以宋趙善紬《自警編》為藍本，將朱熹《名臣言行錄》、及當時流傳之《典型錄》、《厚德錄》、《善善錄》等書，重新編排，分成《學問門》、《道行門》、《交際門》、《家道門》、《出處門》、《政事門》、《民政門》、《兵政門》八門八十二小類，一共九百五十五條，意在供世人借鑑遵循。清修《四庫全書》時，自《永樂大典》中輯佚，僅得四百七十二條，八十二小類亦不存。
