1980年，南开大学历史系创办《南开史学》，在学界颇有声望。后停刊。本次复刊，内容以中国古代史、中国近现代史、世界史为主，以考古学与文物研究为辅，以刊发原创性、前沿性论文为主，兼以书评和读史札记。本刊强调以"南开史学"为主要特色，突出"实学"的研究风格，以社会史和思想史相结合的研究方法，带动研究领域及题目的变革，具有鲜明的南开特点。
